Difficulty 1/5
Red velvet is one of my favourite flavours. It has a bit of cocoa powder and vinegar that really gives it a special touch. The trend with this flavours started with cakes with cream cheese buttercream layers, and then it strongly went over to cupcakes. Nowadays you can find this flavour in pancakes, loaves and even waffles. I loved the idea of making brownies with it and also give it a special topping of cream cheese because the combination is really explosive 🙂
Red Velvet Brownies
Ingredients
For the Red Velvet Brownies
- 170 ml vegetable oil
- 1 egg
- 170 g sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 150 ml milk
- 2 tbsp honey
- 1/2 tsp vanilla essence
- 1 tbsp red food colouring
- 1 tsp cider or apple vinegar
- 250 g all purpose flour
For the cream cheese decoration:
- 200 g cream cheese at room temperature
- 50 g sugar
- 40 ml cream
Instructions
-
For the cream cheese topping, mix everything until it’s very smooth. Put it in a piping bag or a clean plastic bag that you can make a whole in on a corner afterwards.
-
Now we make the brownie mix and as the name says, we need to mix everything. Start with the oil, sugar, egg and salt and mix together well with a whisk. Then add the rest of the liquid ingredients and mix again. Finish with the cocoa powder and flour.
-
Put a bit of vegetable oil on the dish you’re using for your brownies and spread it out using a piece of paper towel. Put baking paper on this and use the oil left on the paper towel to cover this as well.
-
Make a medium hole on the cream cheese bag and make lines over the top of the brownie batter. Then, using a skewer or toothpick, cross the lines to make the design shown in the pictures. The best way for you to understand how this is done is to take a look at the YouTube video lines above ????
-
This goes into the oven at 180C for 30min or until you can insert the tip of the knife and when you take it out it has no batter on it.
-
Wait for it to cool down and cut them. I like to remove 3-5mm around the borders just because they tend to dry out.
-
I shouldn’t have to put this here, but now you can eat them ????
I loved this recipe and my friends who ate them went CRAZY over them. I recommend to make them for someone in need of pampering. Piece of advice: try not to layer them one on top of the other because the red from the brownies tends to stain the cream cheese 🙂
