Strawberry Smoothie Bowl

April 10, 2018 By Alan

If you haven’t joined this trend yet, you’ll love it. Smoothie bowls are literally what their name says: a smoothie that is served in a bowl instead of in a glass. Of course they look really pretty and you can top them with extra fruit, seeds, nuts or whatever you like. I even think it’s ideal for kids who don’t really like to eat fruit because they can decorate their dish and that makes them eager to try it.

These smoothie bowls usually use bananas to make them really creamy but you could also use nut butter (peanut, almond, walnuts) for this same purpose.

The best texture (like the one in the photo) is achieved when the fruit is frozen. I usually don’t freeze the banana so it’s extra creamy. In this case I froze the strawberries and the banana was fresh. This combination makes it have an ice-cream like texture. If you don’t mind it being less thick you can definitely get away with not freezing anything.  You could even remove the yogurt and it would be even thicker.

You can top it with your favourite things: flax seeds, sesame seeds, toasted oatmeal (like me), chia seeds, walnuts, almonds, etc. If give the smoothie texture and gives you a chance to have more fibre in your diet.

Ingredients

  • 10 strawberries
  • 1/2 banana
  • 4 tbsp yogurt or animal / vegetable milk to loosen the mix
  • yummy toppings (more fruit, nuts, seeds, etc)

Instructions

  1. Chop the strawberries and freeze them on a flat surface (it can be a ziploc bag laid on its side). The idea is that they don't freeze in a block so that your blender or food processor doesn't suffer in the process.

  2. Put everything in the blender or food processor until smooth.

  3. I didn't sweeten mine because the bananas bbring enough sweetness for me, but you could also add maple syrup, honey, sugar or sweetener.
